Tasting profile
Structure: full-bodied, low acidity, dry
Marsanne has a long and slightly unfashionable history in north-east Victoria, and it is one of the quiet long-distance runners among white varieties. Young it shows honeysuckle and white peach with a waxy, lanolin texture through the middle; given a decade it turns to honey, beeswax and toasted nut without ever having seemed to change much in between. Acidity is low, which is why it is so often underestimated, but the substance is real and the wine holds its shape for far longer than its freshness alone would suggest. Rutherglen's warmth gives it more weight than the cooler Victorian sites. Serve it barely chilled rather than cold, or the texture disappears.
