Roussillon

**Roussillon** ... — a warm, mountainous region in the far south of France, hugging the Mediterranean coast and the Spanish border near the eastern Pyrenees. **Wines & grapes** — Rich dry reds and whites built on Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan, plus a proud tradition of fortified sweet wines (vins doux naturels) such as Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes. **Character** — Intense sunshine, low rainfall, dramatic schist and granite terraces, and old bush vines produce concentrated, full-bodied wines. The fortified sweet wines, made from very ripe Grenache, range from fresh and grapey to deep, nutty and oxidative. **Good to know** — Catalan culture runs deep here, and Roussillon is one of France's most important sources of traditional fortified wine.
