Kamptal

**Kamptal** is a leading white-wine region in Lower Austria, taking its name from the Kamp, a small tributary of the Danube whose valley is centred on the town of Langenlois. **Wines & grapes** — The signature wines are dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, ranging from bright everyday bottlings to age-worthy single-vineyard wines. Smaller amounts of other whites and some red are also produced. **Character** — A meeting of warm Pannonian air and cool northern currents gives the wines both ripeness and lively acidity. The famous Heiligenstein hill, with its ancient desert-sandstone soils, produces some of Austria's most respected Rieslings. **Good to know** — Kamptal uses the DAC system, which reserves the name for the region's typical Grüner Veltliner and Riesling styles.
