**Gisborne** sits on the eastern tip of New Zealand's North Island, one of the first places in the country to see the sunrise. It is known above all for white wine, and long styled itself as a Chardonnay capital. **Wines & grapes** — Chardonnay is the flagship, typically ripe and generous, alongside aromatic whites such as Gewürztraminer, Viognier and Pinot Gris. Some Merlot and other reds are grown, but the region's heart is clearly white. **Character** — Fertile plains and a warm, sunny maritime climate give wines that are round, fruit-forward and approachable, with softer acidity than New Zealand's cooler zones. **Good to know** — It is a relatively warm, high-yielding area, and a fair share of its fruit has historically fed larger blended bottlings.
