**Basilicata** ... — a small, mountainous region in the arch of southern Italy's "boot," better known for rugged landscapes than for large-scale wine. Its reputation rests largely on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture. **Wines & grapes** — the flagship is Aglianico, especially Aglianico del Vulture, a dark, structured red grown on volcanic soils. Smaller amounts of white and other reds are also made. **Character** — high altitude and cool nights slow ripening, giving Aglianico here firm tannins, bright acidity and real ageing potential. The volcanic terrain lends a savoury, mineral edge, and the wines are often compared to the more famous Aglianico of neighbouring Campania while keeping their own rustic, earthy identity.
