Xinomavro

**Xinomavro** is a red grape from northern Greece, most famously grown in Naoussa in Macedonia. Its name means "acid-black," a fitting description for a variety often compared to Nebbiolo for its power and structure. It is widely regarded as one of Greece's finest reds. **In the glass** — despite a relatively pale, garnet-tinged colour, it delivers intense aromas of red fruit, tomato, olive, dried herbs and a distinctive savoury earthiness. The palate is firmly structured, marked by high acidity and grippy, assertive tannins. **Where it grows** — Naoussa is its benchmark, with important plantings across northern Greece including Amyndeo and Goumenissa, where cooler sites suit its late ripening. **At the table** — a natural with lamb, braised meats and tomato-rich Mediterranean dishes. **Cellaring** — built for the long haul; its acidity and tannin allow the best wines to evolve and improve over a decade or more.
