Georgia

**Georgia** is widely regarded as one of the cradles of winemaking, with an unbroken tradition reaching back some 8,000 years — likely the oldest continuous wine culture on Earth. It is a country where wine is woven into national identity, religion and daily life. **Signature wines** — The white grape Rkatsiteli and the red Saperavi are the pillars; Saperavi is a deeply colored, structured red, notable as a rare teinturier grape with red flesh as well as red skin. Amber (orange) skin-contact whites are a hallmark. **Key regions** — Kakheti in the east is the dominant region, producing the majority of Georgia's wine, with other pockets in Kartli, Imereti and the far west. **Good to know** — Traditional Georgian wine is fermented and aged in large egg-shaped clay vessels called qvevri, buried underground; this ancient method is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage and inspired the modern natural and orange wine movements.
