Pinot Gris

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, off-dry

Alsace Pinot Gris is a far fuller, richer wine than the grape's thin reputation elsewhere would suggest, and Wolfberger — the large co-operative based at Eguisheim — bottles it in the region's classic mould. Ripe pear and quince lead, with a honeyed weight, the smoky note that is a varietal signature in Alsace, and dried apricot and ginger behind. Full-bodied with only moderate acidity, and it typically finishes off-dry rather than bone dry, which is worth knowing before it goes anywhere near a salad. Richer food is the answer: charcuterie, roast pork, or a slice of onion tart.

Serving: Serve at 10–12 °C.
