Friuli Grave is the largest of Friuli's appellations, occupying the gravelly alluvial plain — grave means gravel — laid down by rivers running off the Alps, and those free-draining stony soils combined with cool alpine air give the region's reds a distinctly lean, savoury character. Cabernet Franc has been grown here since the nineteenth century and is far more at home than its Bordeaux reputation suggests. Expect red cherry and raspberry with the green pepper, dried herb and graphite notes the variety always carries, over medium body, fine tannins and bright acidity. Savoury rather than plush, built for the table rather than for contemplation, and good with cured meats, roast pork or anything herbal.
