Dry Riesling from the Bacharacher Hahn, and this is the site that put Toni Jost — and arguably the Mittelrhein — on the map. The estate is one of very few holders of the Hahn, a steep south-facing slate terrace above Bacharach. The Mittelrhein is the smallest and least known of Germany's classic Riesling regions: a narrow stretch of the Rhine gorge below the Mosel, worked almost entirely by hand, and reduced to a few hundred hectares as the terraces became uneconomic. Trocken means fully dry. Green apple and citrus zest with white peach, wet stone and a pronounced slate minerality. Light-bodied with racy, cutting acidity and a clean finish. Lean and energetic rather than fruity, and the slate character is the reason to drink it. Serve cool, not cold. Grilled trout, asparagus, goat cheese, light seafood pasta.
