The Prisoner Wine Company began with a red blend inspired by the "mixed blacks" Italian immigrants once made in Napa, and grew into one of California's most recognisable brands, working with over a hundred growers. Cuttings is their Napa Cabernet, named for the old practice of propagating vines from cuttings taken off favoured sites, and drawn from hillside vineyards east of the Silverado Trail — among them Kuleto's Sage Canyon ground above Lake Hennessey. Despite the varietal name it is a blend: around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with Petite Sirah, Syrah and a little Zinfandel for structure and spice. Eighteen months in French oak, roughly 40% new, at about 15.4% alcohol. Blueberry, dark cherry and cocoa with roasted coffee, blackcurrant, vanilla and brown spice, and tannins that are soft and velvety rather than firm. Generous and smooth by design. Serve at 16 to 18°C with steak or something equally substantial.
