Stag's Leap Wine Cellars made its name with the Cabernet that beat the Bordeaux first growths at the 1976 Judgement of Paris, but Karia is its Chardonnay — the name is Greek for graceful, and the wine is made in a deliberately restrained Napa idiom rather than the buttery, high-oak style the region was once known for. Fruit comes from cooler Napa sites, principally the southern end where bay fog moderates the heat. Barrel fermentation and partial malolactic give texture without dominating: expect white peach, pear and citrus with a light nutty, creamy note and a clean mineral finish. Medium-bodied and balanced, made to go with food rather than to overwhelm it.
