Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, high acidity, dry

A still red Pinot Noir from Kent — still unusual in England, where the chalk is mostly given over to sparkling wine. Simpsons farm the Elham Valley on the North Downs, sheltered by ancient woodland, on the same chalk ridge that continues under the Channel to Champagne and Burgundy. Low-yielding Burgundian clones, six months in barrel with only a fifth of it new, so the oak stays in the background. Bright cherry, raspberry and mulberry over violet, cracked pepper and a savoury forest-floor edge. Medium-bodied and pale in colour, with vivid acidity and fine, supple tannin — a cool-climate Pinot in the fullest sense.
