Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium acidity, dry

Red Shoulder Ranch is Shafer's cool Carneros vineyard at the southern tip of Napa Valley, named for the red-shouldered hawks that hunt there. The Chardonnay is barrel-fermented in French oak without malolactic fermentation, which keeps it fresh despite its richness. Expect Meyer lemon, white peach and pineapple with toasted oak, vanilla and hazelnut, full-bodied and polished, with a lively finish. Best within its first six or seven years.
