Marlborough sits at the north-eastern tip of New Zealand's South Island and is the wine region that made Sauvignon Blanc a global style — the Wairau Valley floor, with its free-draining stony alluvial soils and long cool ripening season, gives the variety an aromatic intensity found nowhere else. This is a single-vineyard, organically farmed example in the riper register: guava, passionfruit and melon with citrus zest and grapefruit rather than the sharply herbaceous, cut-grass character the region can show. A small barrel-fermented portion adds a gentle roundness through the middle without masking the fruit. Bright, zesty acidity carries it to a long refreshing finish, which is what makes Marlborough Sauvignon such a reliable match for shellfish and goat's cheese.
