Graves takes its name from the soil — deep beds of gravel deposited by the Garonne, which drain hard and radiate stored warmth back at the vines, and which gave Bordeaux its first great wines long before the Médoc was drained. The appellation runs south from Pessac-Léognan, and its reds carry a distinctive smoky, earthy minerality alongside the fruit that sets them apart from the Left Bank communes further north. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon here. Expect blackcurrant and dark plum with cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and a gravelly, faintly smoky earth, full-bodied with firm but approachable tannins. Graves reds are generally readier than the Médoc at the same age and offer some of Bordeaux's more reliable value.
