Mumm Napa was established in the early 1980s as the California venture of the Champagne house G.H. Mumm, part of a wave of French sparkling producers who set up in Carneros and the Napa Valley in that period. The wines are made by the traditional method — second fermentation in bottle, extended lees ageing — from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Champagne varieties. What differs is the climate: Napa's warmth gives noticeably more fruit weight and a rounder profile than a Champagne of comparable style. Expect strawberry and red cherry with a citrus lift and a creamy, brioche-scented depth from the lees, carried on a fine persistent bead. Generous and immediately appealing rather than austere.
