Gaudium is the top wine at Marqués de Cáceres, drawn from old low-yielding vines in the Rioja Alta around Cenicero and made only in vintages the house rates highly. The estate was founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner with Bordeaux advice, and Gaudium sits at the modern end of Rioja: fruit-forward and concentrated with a good deal of new French oak, rather than the pale, dried-out register of a traditional Gran Reserva. Ripe black cherry and cassis over vanilla, cedar and sweet spice, with a firm, polished tannic frame and a long, oak-inflected finish. Powerful but not clumsy.
