Khai Wines is the partnership of Lesego Holzapfel and Ezanne Gouws-du Toit, made at Koelenhof outside Stellenbosch. Holzapfel is a descendant of the Khoisan, the first inhabitants of southern Africa, and the brand name comes from that heritage; Gouws-du Toit is a third-generation winemaker with an oenology degree and vintages in New Zealand and Germany behind her. The wine is bottled under the Coastal Region appellation, the broad Western Cape district that takes in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. A Cape red blend in the accessible, fruit-forward style: ripe dark berry and plum with a savoury, faintly earthy edge over soft, supple tannins. Note there is no "Khai" grape variety despite occasional marketing language to that effect — the name is the brand.
