Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry

Khai Wines is the partnership of Lesego Holzapfel and Ezanne Gouws-du Toit, made at Koelenhof outside Stellenbosch. Holzapfel is a descendant of the Khoisan, the first inhabitants of southern Africa, and the brand name comes from that heritage; Gouws-du Toit is a third-generation winemaker with an oenology degree and vintages in New Zealand and Germany behind her. Bottled under the Coastal Region appellation, the broad Western Cape district taking in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. The producers describe the white as representing the plains of a Kalahari sunset: yellow straw in colour, with a subdued nose giving hints of tropical fruit, then crisp and surprisingly full on the palate with a fruit-forward finish. Note there is no "Khai" grape variety despite marketing language to that effect — the name is the brand.
