Gentil

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, dry

Gentil is the only blended wine in Famille Hugel's range, reviving the old Alsace tradition of "Gentil" blends of noble varieties. Gewurztraminer and Sylvaner lead, with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Muscat, all hand-harvested from clay-limestone sites in and around Riquewihr. Gewurztraminer's lychee and rose spice, Muscat's grapiness and Pinot Gris body, kept fresh and dry by Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. An aromatic, versatile everyday white to drink young.

Where it comes from

Alsace, France

Alsace — a distinctive wine region in northeastern France, tucked between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine along the German border.

Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer is a pink-skinned white grape whose roots trace to the village of Tramin in Italy's Alto Adige, a mutation of the older Traminer family.

Silvaner

Silvaner is a white grape that arose as a natural crossing with roots in Austria, though it became most closely associated with German winemaking, where it is valued for its gentle, food-friendly character.

Pinot Blanc

Pinot Blanc is a white grape most associated with Alsace in France, a colour mutation within the Pinot family and known in German-speaking regions as Weißburgunder or Weisser Burgunder.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a white grape and a greyish-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, historically at home in Alsace and known around the world as Pinot Grigio in Italy and Grauburgunder in German-speaking countries.
