A Beerenauslese from the Heuchelheimer Herrenpfad site in the southern Pfalz, made by Martin Bangerth's family estate from Gewürztraminer and Ortega. It is noble-sweet at about 9.5% alcohol, is fermented and raised in stainless steel, and is sold in half bottles. Gewürztraminer brings rose and lychee, and Ortega, an early-ripening variety that reaches high sugar levels, adds apricot, honey and candied citrus. The acidity is moderate rather than Riesling-sharp, so the wine is rich and soft. It suits blue cheese, fruit desserts and spicy Asian food.
