Villa is one of the cru bottlings Christian Zündel draws from his oldest Merlot vines around Beride in the southern Malcantone, given a longer élevage than the estate's other reds. Zündel has farmed biodynamically for decades on eroded gneiss and moraine, and the wine shows it: deep ruby, complex and enveloping, with ripe cherry and plum layered over tobacco, cocoa and spice. Full-bodied but not heavy, the tannins fine and persistent, with a mineral thread that keeps the finish cool. Among the most serious Merlot Ticino makes.
