Worth knowing before you look for another bottle: Château Grand-Pontet no longer exists as a separate wine. Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Château Quintus, bought it in 2021. Its vineyards have gone into Quintus since the 2022 vintage, the same way L'Arrosée and Tertre Daugay did before it. Any bottle you hold predates that. It was a long-standing Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé on clay-limestone just north-west of the town. Mostly Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Black cherry and plum with cedar, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with supple tannin and an earthy Right Bank savour. Approachable rather than austere, built for the medium term, not for decades. Roast lamb, braised beef, duck breast, aged Gouda.
