Western Cape

**Western Cape** is the broad South African province that contains almost all of the country's vineyards, sweeping inland and along the coast from Cape Town. **Wines & grapes** — As an umbrella region it spans nearly every style the country makes: Chenin Blanc (its most-planted grape) and Sauvignon Blanc among the whites, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz, and the local Pinotage among the reds. **Character** — The climate is largely Mediterranean, moderated by the cold Benguela Current off the Atlantic coast and by the cooling Cape Doctor wind, with ancient, weathered soils underfoot. Because it covers so many districts, from Stellenbosch and Paarl to cooler coastal sites, its wines vary widely. **Good to know** — Wines simply labelled Western Cape are often blends drawn from several districts across the province.
