Maldonado

**Maldonado** is a coastal department in southeastern Uruguay, facing the Atlantic near the resort of Punta del Este, and one of the country's more exciting newer areas for quality wine. **Wines & grapes** — Tannat, Uruguay's signature red, is grown here, but the district is especially associated with fresher, coastal styles including Albariño and other whites, plus lighter reds. **Character** — Ocean breezes and cooler maritime conditions set it apart from Uruguay's more established inland vineyards, encouraging wines with bright acidity and a saline, refreshing edge. It remains a small, ambitious region still building its reputation.
