Muscat

**Muscat** is a white grape, or rather a large and ancient family of related varieties grown around the Mediterranean and far beyond, unmistakable for its intensely grapey, floral perfume — one of the few grapes whose wine actually smells of fresh grapes. **In the glass** — expect exuberant aromas of orange blossom, rose, ripe grape and citrus, in styles ranging from bone-dry to gently sparkling to richly sweet and fortified. **Where it grows** — the finest, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, features in France's Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, Italy's Asti, Greece's Samos and Australia's dark fortified Rutherglen Muscats. Muscat of Alexandria and other family members are planted widely across warm regions worldwide. **At the table** — sweet Muscats are delightful with fruit desserts and pastries. **Cellaring** — dry and lightly sparkling styles are best young; the fortified and richly sweet versions can age for decades.
