Marquette

**Marquette** is a red hybrid grape developed by the University of Minnesota and released in the 2000s, bred for excellent cold hardiness so that quality red wine could be grown in harsh northern climates. It has become a cornerstone variety for growers in the American Upper Midwest and other cold regions. **In the glass** — medium-bodied with dark cherry, berry, pepper and often a herbal or spicy note; it keeps good colour and moderate tannin, with lively acidity typical of cold-climate reds. **Where it grows** — planted across Minnesota, Wisconsin, the northern United States and parts of Canada and Scandinavia, wherever winters are too cold for classic vinifera vines. It handles frost and disease well, making viticulture possible where it otherwise would not be. **At the table** — good with grilled meats, burgers and hearty comfort food. **Cellaring** — generally best enjoyed within a few years, though sturdier examples can hold a little longer.
