Godello

**Godello** is a white grape from northwest Spain, native to Galicia and especially the Valdeorras area, where it was rescued from near-extinction in the twentieth century to become one of the region's most prized whites; it is also known as Gouveio in Portugal. **In the glass** — it offers pear, green apple, citrus and stone fruit with a mineral, sometimes slightly saline edge, medium body, fresh acidity and a naturally rich texture that responds well to lees-ageing and restrained oak. **Where it grows** — Valdeorras is its benchmark home, with plantings across Galicia and neighbouring León, while as Gouveio it contributes to whites and even Port blends in Portugal's Douro. **At the table** — lovely with grilled fish, seafood and poultry. **Cellaring** — enjoyable young, but the more textured, barrel-aged examples can improve and deepen over several years.
