Castelão

**Castelão** is a red grape from southern Portugal, particularly associated with the Setúbal Peninsula and Palmela, and one of the more widely planted red varieties in the country's warmer south. It also goes by the name Periquita. **In the glass** — It is medium-bodied with red and dark berry fruit, often accompanied by earthy, spicy and slightly gamey notes as it ages, with fresh acidity and moderate, sometimes firm tannins. **Where it grows** — It is grown across southern and central Portugal, from the sandy soils of the Setúbal area to the Alentejo and beyond, producing a range of styles from bright, everyday reds to more structured wines. **At the table** — A good companion to grilled meats, roast pork and rustic Portuguese stews. **Cellaring** — Simpler versions drink well young, while riper, more concentrated bottlings can develop savoury complexity over several years.
