Arneis

**Arneis** is a white grape from Piedmont in north-west Italy, most closely tied to the Roero hills across the river from the Barolo zone. Once nearly forgotten, it was revived in the late 20th century and is now a benchmark northern Italian white. **In the glass** — it offers a pale gold colour with delicate aromas of pear, white peach, almond and chamomile. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with a rounded texture, relatively soft acidity and a gently bitter, nutty finish. **Where it grows** — Roero and the Langhe in Piedmont are its heartland, where it appears in the Roero Arneis and Langhe Arneis appellations; small plantings exist elsewhere, including Australia and the United States. **At the table** — a fine match for antipasti, risotto and delicate fish dishes. **Cellaring** — generally best enjoyed young and fresh, within two or three years of the vintage.
