Malbec — Côt, as it is often called here — is a permitted minority grape in the appellation and rarely bottled alone, so a varietal example is a deliberate choice: it gives a deeply coloured, plummy wine with violet perfume and a graphite edge, softer and rounder than the same grape in Cahors further up the river. Black plum and blackberry with dried herbs and cocoa, medium-bodied with moderate, supple tannin.
