Vigneti del Salento is the Puglian arm of the Fantini Group, founded by Valentino Sciotti in 1994 with the explicit aim of stopping the south's habit of shipping anonymous bulk wine north. The wines are made at two wineries in the province of Taranto by resident winemaker Danilo Gizzi with consultant Filippo Baccalaro, from old alberello bush vines around Sava and Manduria — some approaching a century — farmed through long partnerships with local grower families. A real production entity with named people, not a private label. Expect the house style: deep ruby with violet edges, ripe black cherry and blackberry over plum, sweet baking spice and a touch of leather, full-bodied and generous with silky tannins. Primitivo di Manduria is the appellation where the grape does its best work.
