Mencía from Ribeira Sacra, where vineyards cling to terraces so steep above the Sil and Miño gorges that the harvest is often brought out by boat. The site does the work: red cherry and raspberry with violet, crushed slate and a peppery, graphite-edged savour, medium-bodied with fine tannin and vivid Atlantic acidity. Nothing like the heavy reds of inland Spain — this is closer in spirit to a cool-climate Syrah or a Loire Cabernet Franc, and it takes a slight chill well.
