Bergerac sits just east of Bordeaux on the Dordogne, sharing its climate and its grape varieties without the prices, and its rosés are made from the same Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that go into the reds. Pale to mid pink, dry and light-bodied, built on primary fruit and fresh acidity: strawberry and redcurrant with a citrus edge and a faintly herbal note from the Cabernets. Straightforward and refreshing rather than complex, and made deliberately that way. This is a style with a short life — the fruit and the acidity that carry it both fade within a couple of years of the harvest, and there is no structure underneath to take over. Drink it in the summer following the vintage, properly chilled.
