Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Claret is the old British name for red Bordeaux, and this is the entry point: a Merlot-led AOC Bordeaux blended for Marks & Spencer by a Bordeaux négociant, from the flatter vineyards of the Entre-Deux-Mers and the right-bank hinterland rather than the famous communes. What it does well is the recognisable shape of the region — red plum and blackcurrant, a faint cedar and pencil-lead note, dried herbs at the edges — on a medium frame with soft, dusty tannin and no oak weight. It is a supper wine, at its best in its first three or four years while the fruit is still fresh; it will not improve with keeping. Serve at 16-17°C. The exact blend is not published on the label, so no grape list is recorded here.
