Tasting profile
Structure: light-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry
Erupção Vulcânica is a red from the volcanic island of Pico in the Azores, made by António Maçanita, the winemaker best known for reviving Azorean wine. Pico's vines grow in cracks of black basalt close to the sea, sheltered by stone walls from the salty Atlantic wind, and the wine carries that place into the glass. It is an open, translucent ruby, light in alcohol, with red currant, sour cherry and cranberry fruit, a whiff of smoke and a distinctly saline, sea-spray freshness over fine tannins. Serve it slightly cool, around 14–16 °C, with grilled tuna or sardines, octopus, roast chicken, charcuterie or mushroom dishes. It is delicious young, and its bright acidity keeps it lively for several years.
