Azores

**Azores** is a remote Portuguese archipelago in the mid-Atlantic, where vines grow in one of the most dramatic wine landscapes anywhere. **Wines & grapes** — Production centres on distinctive whites from grapes such as Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, giving mineral, saline, sometimes briny wines. Volumes are small and largely artisanal. **Character** — Vines are often planted in small stone-walled enclosures on black volcanic basalt to shelter them from wind and sea spray, and the wines carry a hallmark salty, volcanic minerality with brisk acidity. **Good to know** — The historic vineyard landscape on Pico Island is recognised for its striking lava-stone walls.
