Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Clare Valley Shiraz from Jim Barry, one of the region's established family names — and the Clare is worth distinguishing from the Barossa an hour south. It sits higher and cooler, with big day-to-night temperature swings, so its Shiraz comes out medium-bodied and peppery rather than plush. Blackberry and dark plum with cracked black pepper, dried herbs, a light earthy leather note and gentle oak. Medium-bodied with soft well-integrated tannin and enough acidity to keep it lively. An entry-tier bottling from a serious producer: honest, fruit-forward and unpretentious, made for the table rather than the cellar. Best in its first several years while the fruit is forward. Barbecued lamb, beef burgers, grilled sausages, aged cheddar. Serve slightly cool.
