White Rioja, which surprises people — the region makes far more red, but Viura has been grown there as long as Tempranillo has. This is the modern, unoaked style rather than the traditional one. Traditional white Rioja spends years in barrel and comes out golden, nutty and oxidative; this is the opposite approach, made cool and clean to keep the fruit intact. Viura with a little Malvasía for perfume. Green apple and lemon zest with white blossom, a light stone-fruit note and a faintly herbaceous edge. Light-bodied, dry and crisp, with a clean refreshing finish. Uncomplicated by design and none the worse for it. Serve it cold with seafood tapas, grilled white fish or a salad, and drink it young.
