Alsace Grand Cru Gewurztraminer from the Furstentum, a steep south-facing site above Kientzheim on limestone and marl — one of the warmest of the fifty-one grand crus, and long regarded as among the best sites in Alsace for this variety. Old vines add depth and concentration beyond a standard Alsace Gewurztraminer. Lychee, rose petal and ginger with honey, citrus peel and white pepper. Full-bodied with the oily, mouth-coating texture the grape always gives, and a firm mineral backbone from the limestone that stops it turning flabby. Gewurztraminer is naturally low in acid, so that mineral grip is what makes a grand cru version worth the money — and it carries a touch of residual sweetness even when labelled dry. Serve cold. Foie gras, Munster, spiced dishes, roast poultry with fruit.
