Grand Tawny

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, sweet

Grand Tawny is a fortified wine from DiGiorgio in Coonawarra, on South Australia's Limestone Coast, made in the Australian tawny tradition: red wine fortified with grape spirit and aged in old oak casks, where slow, gentle oxidation turns the fruit to raisin and toffee. Expect a sweet, warming glass of raisin, dried fig, caramel and walnut, with candied orange peel and a hint of mocha on a long, smooth finish. It is ready to drink when bottled and needs no cellaring, and once opened it keeps well for several weeks, so it can be enjoyed a glass at a time. Serve it slightly cool after dinner with sticky date pudding, blue cheese or a handful of roasted nuts.
