Zinfandel

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Denner's estate Zinfandel comes from the limestone hills of Paso Robles' Willow Creek District. It is mostly Zinfandel with small amounts of other estate reds blended in, and it is aged in large 500-litre puncheons, a minority of them new, so the oak stays in the background. Ripe and generous but not jammy, it shows wild strawberry, mulberry and blackberry with freshly ground black pepper, licorice and a savoury, hoisin-like note, over a stony, mineral frame. The palate is full, with rounded tannins and a long, spicy finish.

Where it comes from

Paso Robles, United States

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a red grape genetically identical to Croatia's Tribidrag (or Crljenak) and to southern Italy's Primitivo, though it became an icon in California.
