Tasting profile
Structure: full-bodied, high tannin, high acidity, dry
Vranec means black stallion, and both halves of the name are earned — the wine is almost opaque, dark red to black with a blue edge, and its tannins are famously hard to tame when young. A Balkan native and a descendant of Tribidrag, the grape known elsewhere as Zinfandel and Primitivo, which shows in the high sugar, high alcohol and the pleasantly bitter finish. Blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry over chocolate, garrigue and, with barrel age, vanilla and mocha. Full-bodied with high tannin and unusually high acidity, and North Macedonia makes it in a bigger, richer register than Montenegro does.
