**North Macedonia** is a small Balkan country with a long viticultural history and a warm, sunny continental climate that favours ripe, generous red wines. **Signature wines** — The flagship grape is Vranec, which yields deep, full-bodied, tannic reds, often supported by Kratošija and international varieties. Among whites, Smederevka and the aromatic Temjanika are widely grown, and Stanušina is a prized local rarity. **Key regions** — The Vardar River Valley in the country's centre is the dominant zone, and within it Tikveš is the largest and best-known winegrowing district. **Good to know** — For much of the 20th century the region supplied bulk wine within the former Yugoslavia, but since independence producers have invested heavily in bottling under their own labels and highlighting native grapes. Warm days and a generous growing season make full-bodied reds the country's natural strength.
