The second wine of Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé B on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, owned by the Wertheimer family — of Chanel — since 1996. The label has a specific origin. Canon bought neighbouring Château Matras in 2011, and the fruit from the eleven hectares around the restored twelfth-century Chapelle de Mazerat, plus younger vines on the hillside, became Croix Canon. The stone cross at the chapel entrance gives the wine its name. Merlot led with Cabernet Franc, aged eighteen months in French oak with a modest proportion new. Black cherry and plum with cedar, graphite, violet and dried herbs. Full-bodied with smooth well-integrated tannin and a fresh savoury finish. Approachable earlier than the grand vin while keeping the estate's limestone-driven precision. Good from a few years and comfortable across a decade. Roast lamb, braised beef, duck confit.
