Lalande-de-Pomerol lies just north of Pomerol across the Barbanne stream, and shares much of its neighbour's clay-and-gravel character without the extraordinary prices — which makes it one of Bordeaux's more reliable places to look for value. Merlot dominates, usually with Cabernet Franc, and the wines are plush and generous in the right-bank manner: plum and black cherry with cocoa, violets, a touch of truffle and iron, medium to full-bodied with supple tannins. Approachable considerably earlier than the Médoc, though good examples hold a decade and more. Barrail des Moulins is the cuvée; Château La Fleur Chevrol is a family property in the appellation.
