Bodegas Valdemar sits at Oyón in Rioja Alavesa, run by the Martínez Bujanda family, and the Conde de Valdemar Reserva is their classic statement: Tempranillo given the Reserva treatment, which under DOCa rules means at least three years ageing with a minimum of one in barrel before it reaches you. Expect red cherry and plum wrapped in the vanilla-and-coconut sweetness of oak, deepening with time toward leather, tobacco and dried herb. Medium-bodied and savoury rather than heavy — a Rioja built around balance and the length of its finish. The 2017 vintage was cut short by the April frost that hit a third of the region, and the small crop that survived gave unusually concentrated fruit.
