Mas La Plana is the single 29-hectare parcel in Penedès that made Torres' reputation abroad when the 1970 beat a field of first growths in Paris, and it remains pure Cabernet Sauvignon from that one vineyard. The style sits deliberately between Bordeaux and the Mediterranean: blackcurrant and cedar with the graphite line of good Cabernet, but warmed by black olive, mint and a riper, rounder mid-palate than the Médoc gives. Two years in French oak add vanilla and structure without smothering the fruit. Firmly tannic on release and built to age, it softens into tobacco and dried herbs with a decade behind it.
