Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry
Federico Artico farms eleven hectares at Campoleone in the Castelli Romani, where the Roman countryside meets the Agro Pontino. His father bought the land through the late 1990s a hectare at a time with no plan beyond wanting to farm it; Federico began making wine in 2012, tore out the old tendone-trained vines and replanted with better clones. Around 45,000 bottles across nine wines, and the striking labels are the work of the Roman street artist Diamond. His stated aim is vino pop — serious, territorial wine that a wine obsessive and a casual drinker can enjoy from the same bottle. The reds are built around Merlot, sometimes alone and sometimes with Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano alongside. Note that our record names this simply "Artico", the estate's own name rather than a cuvée — his reds are bottled as Ossidiana and Sperone, and we have not established which this is, so the grape list is left open.
